"Is stammering just a phase which children go through?"

Well, yes and no. It is true that many children do pass through a stage when it sounds as if they are stammering. This can last several weeks, or even months, and then they will become fluent again. It is estimated that up to four out of five children will overcome the problem - some will need help while others grow out of it. There are some children who countinue to stammer and would probably benefit from additional specialist advice.

Note: The earlier help is provided, the more likely the child is to either overcome the problem or learn to manage it successfully.

Rees (10) only stammered at school and only in some lessons. It made a real difference to him when we arranged an informal meeting for him, his teacher and his parents.

He came up with some sensible ideas to help his teacher deal with those difficult moments.
